Scope: Design and production of PAUT calibration blocks:

  • Design of calibration blocks;
  • Coordination of manufacturing activities of calibration blocks;
  • Certification of final product.

BCS expertise was requested to conduct PAUT inspection of piping in F22 material, in accordance with a very stringent specification and acceptance criteria.

Initial stage of the project was the design and manufacturing of calibration and demonstration blocks. A total of 14 demonstration blocks in 7 different configurations were welded and EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machined in Italy.

These demonstration blocks were used by Chevron ETC department to qualify PAUT & TOFD technicians. After passing the Company qualification, the operators had to undergo an additional project specific practical test on a defective weld. BCS had an outstanding pass rate on these examinations.

Subsequently, each scanning technique for each configuration has been created and validated on the relevant demonstration block.

By the end of the project, more than 1.000 joints were inspected by PAUT & TOFD.

MUT inspection on carbon steel and Inconel 626 welds

Client: BUREAU VERITAS

Location: Italy

Scope: Manufacturing of TKY sample for personnel qualification.

Bureau Veritas conducted examination of NDT personnel for a major Italian oil & gas and renewable energy constructor. The end Client requested an integration of the ISO9712 certificate with a T-K-Y examination. The exam had to be conducted on a project specific joint configuration.

Bureau Veritas commissioned the execution of the test specimen to BCS NDT. A K-joint has been welded and sent to BCS facility. The weld has been cut into 4 parts. Flaws have been inserted in various positions in the weld by Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). Notches have been implanted on the external side of the weld and in the root (inside the branch). Embedded notches and side-drilled holes have been machined at the extremities of the 4 parts, in order to simulate planar and volumetric embedded flaws.

Shell diameter and thickness were 50” x 65mm. Branch size was 30”x 40mm. The main challenge was the manipulation of these heavy and large parts under the EDM machines, and at the same time maintaining a high level of precision.
